Login to MassCat using your library code, username and password.

Search for a bibliographic record for the item you wish to borrow. See the: Tips for Searching the MassCat Catalog document for help with searching.
Once you have located the correct record, display that record in whatever format you desire.
Requesting books and other returnable items:
Click on the “Request this Item” button beneath the toolbar:

A new browser window will appear with an ILL Request Form in it. Make the window larger so you can easily read the form.
The following information needs to be filled out in the ILL Request Form:
(NOTE: All fields appearing in red on the form must be filled in.)
Request Date: Automatically filled in.
Request Type: Click on the arrow and select “Returnable (loan).”
Material Type: Automatically filled in.
Format: Choose a format type if appropriate, select “None of the Below.”
Title: Automatically filled in.
Author: Automatically filled in.
Publisher: Automatically filled in.
Date: Automatically filled in.
ISBN: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
ISSN: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
Accession Number: Automatically filled in.
OCLC Number: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
Lender List: Automatically filled in.
Patron Name: Required. Fill in with patron’s name. (Potential lenders will not see the patron’s name in their version of the request. This is just for your information, so you will know for whom you requested the item.)
Library Card Number: Optional.
Need By: Optional. If your patron has a deadline, click on arrow and select date patron needs item by.
Address: Optional. Fill in patron’s address. (Potential lenders will not see the patron’s address in their version of the request. This is just for your information, so you will know how to reach your borrower.)
Phone/Fax/Email: Only one field is required. Fill in preferred method of contacting patron: telephone number, fax number, or email address. (Potential lenders will not see this in their version of the request. This is just for your information, so you will know how to reach your borrower.)
Article Information: Fill in appropriate fields if necessary, otherwise leave blank.
Special Instructions: Fill in other information or instructions that you wish to communicate to potential lenders.
Ship to Address: Fill in if address to send request to is different from library address.
Max Cost: Leave blank.
Click on the “Submit” button at the top of the screen.
Once the request has been processed, the window will change to a summary of the request you have placed with the following message:
“Your Library Loan request has been submitted.
Please close this window to return to the catalog.”
Click the “Close” button.
Requesting Photocopies:
Click on the “Request this Item” button beneath the toolbar:

A new browser window will appear with an ILL Request Form in it. Make the window larger so you can easily read the form.

Publisher: Automatically filled in.
Date: Automatically filled in.
ISBN: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
ISSN: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
Accession Number: Automatically filled in.
OCLC Number: Automatically filled in if record contains one, otherwise space is blank.
Lender List: Automatically filled in.

Article Author: Fill in the author of the article being requested.
Pagination: Required. Fill in the page number or range of numbers to be copied.
Copyright:
By: Fill in your initials.
Special Instructions: Fill in other information or instructions that you wish to communicate to potential lenders.
Ship to Address: Fill in if address to send request to is different from library address.
Max Cost: Leave blank.
Click on the “Submit” button at the top of the screen.
Once the request has been processed, the window will change to a summary of the request you have placed with the following message:
“Your Library Loan request has been submitted.
Please close this window to return to the catalog.”
Click the “Close” button.
